Yesterday Afternoon there was an incident where a male identified himself to an elderly lady as a Police Officer.  He was in plain clothes and showed a Hampshire Contabulary Warrant card but with a badge that looked more like an American shield, somewhat larger than the standard UK badges.  The advice from our Crime Prevention Officer is that you should not accept any ID on it's own and look for other things that coroborate the ID, such as a Police car, a Gasboard van, a waterboard van etc.  If you have any doubts at all then phone the 0845 045 45 45 number (or the relevant company) and verify that the person is genuinely in your area.
