More cold-calling warnings from the doorstep crime unit PDF Print E-mail

Warning - Traders are currently cold calling in the Basingstoke area of Hampshire offering power washing, roof cleaning services and/or roof repairs.

Trading Standards would advise consumers not to agree to work that is instigated as a result on a cold call or via a leaflet drop.  Consumers should obtain at least 3 quotes from reputable businesses or traders who belong to a recognised trade association, such as the Hampshire County Council Buy With Confidence Scheme.  Details of this scheme can be obtained by telephoning 01962 833620, via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or via the website www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk

Traders who agreed work at the home of an individual or at a place other than their usual business premises are required to provide consumers with a Notice of Right to Cancel, which gives consumers a 7 day cooling off period.  Work should not commence until this period has ended, unless written agreement is first obtained from that consumer.

If anyone has any information about traders who are cold calling or requires any advice on doorstep crime they can contact Hampshire County Council's Quick Response Team on 01962 833666, where specially trained officers are on hand to provide assistance.

Yellow Pages are going to start being delivered from the 28th July 2010, these will take up to 3 weeks to deliver, so if you are on holiday during that period or the house is going to be unoccupied for any length of time please arrange for the book to be collected, so that it is not left on the doorstep for weeks, indicating that there is no-one is in residence.

Request for outstanding smartwater money

I am currently trying to manage the neighbourhood watch smartwater accounts, and was presented with several cheques this morning as payment for smartwater received a year ago.
I really need to ensure that all of the money collected for smartwater is banked appropriately and in good time, and I am concerned that there may be further money waiting to be sent in.
May I ask therefore, that anybody who is in receipt of money for smartwater, please return it to me at Basingstoke Police station as soon as possible (and at the latest before the 1st August 2010). Please do not send cash, but identify clearly who it is from.
Very soon this will be administered and banked by the NHW committee, but I am particularly interested in cheques already written out to Hampshire Constabulary.
Thank you for your help in this matter,
PS 2645

Just to let you know, we had a fantastic year in 09/10 with calls up 20%  and arrests up 63% largely as a result of the Most Wanted part of our website.  We also had nearly 900 detections which means that every five calls we get leads to three cases being cleared up.  In simple terms we get six calls every day about crime in this force area which leads to six arrests a week. Another statistic for you is that the money we raise and spend locally divided by the number of arrests we have achieved shows that the cost of each arrest is a mere trifle at £130.

Over the last few weeks there have been reports from the Witley/Milford and Charterhouse area about a male calling door to door offering wheelie bin cleaning services. This male offers to clean bins after they have been emptied and asks for £20 to cover a number of cleanings. The male then does not return to clean bins and offers a range of excuses why he is not able to carry out the work. Unfortunately, the male is plausible and very pleasant, and gives a home address in Horsell, Woking. He has provided documentation stating the Waverley Borough Council has given approval for his work, which is not true as Waverley do not endorse specific traders. He also carries a piece of paper which he claims is signed by a Surrey police officer. This is also a fake document, as we do not approve traders to operate. This male is already under investigation by Surrey trading standards, and also by our colleagues in Woking.

Please could anyone approached by this man, or by any other trader you may have suspicions of please contact Surrey police on 0845 125 2222
