Over the last few weeks there have been reports from the Witley/Milford and Charterhouse area about a male calling door to door offering wheelie bin cleaning services. This male offers to clean bins after they have been emptied and asks for £20 to cover a number of cleanings. The male then does not return to clean bins and offers a range of excuses why he is not able to carry out the work. Unfortunately, the male is plausible and very pleasant, and gives a home address in Horsell, Woking. He has provided documentation stating the Waverley Borough Council has given approval for his work, which is not true as Waverley do not endorse specific traders. He also carries a piece of paper which he claims is signed by a Surrey police officer. This is also a fake document, as we do not approve traders to operate. This male is already under investigation by Surrey trading standards, and also by our colleagues in Woking. Please could anyone approached by this man, or by any other trader you may have suspicions of please contact Surrey police on 0845 125 2222 |

This is a new one I hadn't heard of before, the victim received a phone call purporting to be from BT and stating that they were then investigating computer problems, after taking some details down were actually able to take over the computer. Fortunately the victim had the foresight to ring BT and establish that it was not them contacting the aggreived. The computer was switched off from the mains and hopefully no details taken from the Hard Drive. Hopefully not too much advice is required on this one suffice it to say that this is possible (in fact relatively easy to do) so be carefull as to what information you give out and only to people who you are certain should legitimately have it.

Recently there have been several occasions where our Rogue Traders are offering to cut trees of any sort, on one occasion even starting to cut them without being asked and then wanted money for cleaning up the mess they had just made. Should you want trees etc cut, we would recommend that you seek the guidance of the yellow pages or internet for a suitable company. Bicycles are extremely vulnerable at this time of year and already it is clear to see many people are getting complacent, on one occasion a bicycle was left unattended in a front garden for less than a minute and was taken and there have been several others where they have been taken from front gardens or from rear gardens where the gate hasn't been locked. Most incidents of this type are opportunist type thefts and won't happen if a little more thought went into the security side of things. Regards,

Warning - Rogue Traders are cold calling and leaflet dropping in the Denmead, Waterlooville, Cowplain, Horndean and surrounding areas of Hampshire offering to block pave/tarmac driveways etc. These traders are not providing consumers with the required notice of right to cancel, which gives consumers a 7 day cooling off period and are starting work without obtaining written consent before any work is commenced. If anyone has any information about these traders or requires any advice on doorstep crime or callers at their homes they can contact Hampshire County Council's Quick Response Team on 01962 833666, where specially trained officers are on hand to provide assistance.

Current Hoaxes identified over the last weekend, note that all of these have occurred to residents in our Rural areas, though contact has always been made by phone. - Phone call enquiring whether you own a Dyson Vacuum cleaner followed by an attempt to arrange a service and a direct debit for regular servicing. This is not endorsed by Dyson and it is likely that the parts will cost far more than they would through Dyson, who I believe offer most parts for free in the first five years anyway.
- The fitting of an alarm for £1, I have mentioned this before, the money is made from alarm monitoring contracts which are compulsory with the fitting of the alarm and are very expensive.
- Crime research who claim to be affiliated to SAS Fire and Security have cropped up again claiming to be working with Hampshire Constabulary. They are not and are highly unlikely to ever be, as mentioned before internet research or word of mouth are good recomendations
